Shopify Launches Shop Cash, $1,000,000 Giveaways on Shop Day

Shopify celebrated its 17th birthday on June 2, 2023. To mark the occasion, the Canadian e-commerce giant hosted its inaugural Shop Day event with the help of Shopify merchants like MrBeast, Trixie Cosmetics, and Monday Swimwear. In the event, Shopify launched Shop Cash and gave away more than $1,000,000 through the new rewards program.

Shop Cash offers a one percent reward to customers on each online purchase using Shop Pay. The checkout offered by Shopify is easy and rewards the users on online shopping. They can use the Shop app to check the balance of their Shop Cash rewards and redeem them for future transactions.

Shoppers can redeem Shop Cash by clicking on those links and spending directly in the Shop app. Their Shop Cash can be redeemed for up to 30 days once it’s been claimed.

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein calls it a “coming of age moment” for e-commerce and his company. “It’s become an incredible app that allows shoppers to discover great brands, check out with one tap, and track orders in real time,” he said in a statement.

“Shop Cash represents the next evolution of Shop, connecting independent brands to more shoppers, and rewarding those shoppers for being loyal fans,” Finkelstein added.

On Twitter, Finkelstein explained how the company’s new product aims to “make commerce better for everyone”. “Today is Shopify’s birthday (aka SHOP DAY). 17 years ago, we launched Shopify to make commerce better for everyone. Today we power millions of businesses. To celebrate our birthday we’re giving away $1 million in Shop Cash.”

Shopify reiterated the benefits of Shop Cash on Twitter, saying: “Today is Shopify’s 17th Birthday aka Shop Day and because the best birthday gift is – here’s a $5 Shop Cash gift for you, SHOP Introducing…Shop Day”.

Shopify’s Birthday

In 2006, Tobi Lutke founded Shopify with Scott Lake, who also helped him start the snowboarding equipment online store, Snowdevil. Then working as a computer programmer, Lutke saw an opportunity to help independent merchants sell online products.

“Seventeen years ago we launched Shopify! The best way to celebrate is to ship- so we are making Shop Cash available everyone in the US. And if you want to try it, we are giving away one million dollars in Shop Cash,” CEO Lutke tweeted.

Merchant partners like MrBeast and Monday Swimwear helped Shopify host its inaugural Shop Day. They shared custom links across their social channels with their fans. Shopify explained: “Shoppers can redeem Shop Cash by clicking on those links and spending directly in the Shop app. Their Shop Cash can be redeemed for up to 30 days once it’s been claimed. Every day is a good day to shop from independent brands in the Shop app, but Shop Day is even better!”

“Even better, to celebrate Shop Day, hundreds of brands are running exclusive Shop Cash offers. Through Shop Cash offers, shoppers will find incentives to explore new brands and can boost their Shop Cash by 2x, 5x, and 10x. The more they spend, the more they earn. It’s a win-win for everyone,” it added.

MrBeast on Shopify

Shopify merchant and popular YouTuber MrBeast made the most of Shop’s most prolific flash sale ever by selling exclusive collectibles within an hour. The American YouTuber customized his Shop storefront, especially for Shopify’s special occasion.

“From flash sales with the internet’s biggest creators like MrBeast through to independent retailers just getting started, Shop is the destination for commerce today,” Finkelstein said.

Jimmy Donaldson is the man behind the MrBeast YouTube channel. His relationship with Shopify and “friend” Finkelstein is old and getting stronger with time. The Shopify President has time and again spoken of MrBeast and his promotions. In December 2022, when MrBeast climbed a mountain in Antarctica, Finkelstein was among the first few to share a clip from his YouTube video that shows him speaking of Shopify in high regard.

In November, Shopify CEO Lutke heaped praise on MrBeast after Shopify published a blog post documenting his journey. Finkelstein quoted Lutke’s tweet, calling Donaldson an inspiration for a new gen of entrepreneurs.

In August when Donaldson completed 100 million subscribers for his YouTube channel ‘MrBeast‘, the Shopify President praised his journey recalling that he had only three million YouTube subscribers when he joined the Canada-based e-commerce platform.

Why Choose Shop Pay?

In October last year, MrBeast released 200 limited edition Beast socks on his Shopify store. Surprisingly, the stock went sold out within three minutes. On his Shopify store, MrBeast offers an option to shop with Shop Pay, paying in four interest-free installments for orders over $50.00.

Formerly known as Shopify Pay, Shop Pay is Shopify’s own accelerated checkout method. It was launched in 2017 and now claims to have helped over 100 million buyers make online purchases from Shopify stores. It promises to grow your business as its audience grows. On its website, Shop Pay claims that its audience growth has doubled since 2020.

Offering the highest converting checkout on the internet, Shop Pay states “Our study showed that checkouts going through Shop Pay have an average checkout-to-order rate of 1.72x times higher than those going through regular checkouts. Why? Because Shop Pay provides a seamless shopping experience. Once a buyer uses Shop Pay for the first time, their information is saved for future purchases—they can then securely speed through checkout with a simple tap.”

On Shop Day, Shopify used the conversion power of Shop Pay to help brands find and retain customers. “Over 100 million high-intent, high-value buyers are opted into one-click checkout with Shop Pay. It’s the single most popular and trusted digital wallet on Shopify,” Shopify said.

The company claims that the Shop app motivates shoppers to spend more money and ensures their return to the online store. The data released by Shopify says that “every day, thousands of shoppers buy from a merchant for the first time, and 35% of the orders on the Shop app are repeat purchases”.

To support its claim, Shopify cited research from “one of the Big 3 consulting firms,” noting that “Shop Pay can lift conversion by as much as 50% compared to guest checkout, outpacing other accelerated checkouts by as much as 15 percent”.

How to Gain From Shop Cash?

Shopify launched the new rewards program immediately after the announcement. Currently, it is only available for merchants and shoppers based in the United States. One can easily redeem the Shop Cash rewards using the Shop app.
